Ask anyone and they will tell you I am obsessed with watching videos on You Tube. Ask again and they'll tell you that I am even more obsessed with watching the Guns'n'Roses video catalog.
I just finished reading "Fargo Rock City" by Chuck Klosterman - who is most well known as a columnist for Spin. It has it's moments of being a little boring, but all in all, you can feel his love for heavy metal. He spends a lot of time discussing his first ever metal album- "Shout at the Devil" by Motley Crue - but you can tell that his true love is "Appetite for Destruction" by Guns'n'Roses.
I got Appetite when I was 6th grade. I managed to slide the cassette in between Rick Ashtley and Madonna at the check out line with my mom somehow barely noticing. It was something completely different from anything I had ever listened to. To tell you the truth, I think I was more excited by the fact that I was listening to something that was a little "dirty" - you know, swears, drugs and exposed boobs on the cassette insert.
Anyway, Mr. Klosterman mentions that his love for GNR stems from the fact that Axl's lyrics have an angst that is real, unlike a lot of the music at the time. When he shouts "Welcome to Jungle," he is not welcoming the listener, people were welcoming him. And after you see the video - it kind of explains it all. That and he looks way better when he first gets off the bus rather than with his HUGE hair.
On that note, down below are my two favorite GNR videos for your viewing pleasure. Once again, I love Axl's hair in "Welcome to the Jungle"! It is HUGE!!! I can't get over it. Also study the dance he does while singing "my serpentine." Awesome.
I also love the video for "Don't Cry." I'm not quite sure what it is - maybe it's the fact that it features his then, true to life girlfriend, Stephanie Seymore, and gives us some insight into what it might be like to be apart of Axl's life. Or, it could be that Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon fame is singing backups on the rooftop with the band, or maybe it's that I really can't figure the video out. All I know is that I enjoy it much more than "November Rain."
*** I just want to say that I could care less about GNR now. I am NOT waiting for the long awaited Chinese Democracy, nor do I think Axl is anywhere near as hot as he used to be. He's actually pretty creepy. With that said, enjoy.

And Slash really had some excellent guitar licks too, didn't he?
